Thankfully (for me at least) it seems the answer is “No”. Whilst developments in AI have created the potential to automate certain aspects of web design and streamline certain tasks, it is unlikely to replace the need for skilled human designers. Here’s a few reasons why…
Creativity
Web design isn’t just about functionality. It incorporates a good deal of creativity to present content that is visually appealing and engaging for users. Whilst AI might be able to suggest colour palettes or basic design layouts, it lacks any sense of creative intuition or artistic flare that a human designer can provide.
Empathy
A key part of successful web design involves delivering a good user experience (UX). An understanding of user behaviour, interaction and even psychology are required so that a web designer can anticipate user expectations and needs and subsequently deliver the best UX possible. This human intuition is (at least not yet) not associated with current AI capabilities.
Customisation
Good web designers will seek to deliver unique designs, layouts and interactivity that cannot be achieved via AI driven design tools which tend towards a selection of generic templates, lacking originality and flair. A website should be a reflection of a business brand identity and values, which will often require a subtle application of design knowledge and experience that is simply lacking in AI.
Collaboration
Web design projects typically require input from front-end web designers, developers, project managers and clients. Good communication is required to take on board client feedback and iterative web design work. AI systems lack the nuance of human communication to engage in meaningful dialogue.
So it looks like the services of an experienced and skilled web designer will still be in demand for the time being. Phew!
